The warm-up set

I've been a DJ for over 20 years now, through my 20's into my early 30's I played every weekend at clubs and festivals across Johannesburg in South Africa.

In the later part of that career I've built up a podcast with a group of friends called The Imaginarium.

I loved the opening set. It's the layer of atmosphere you get to lay down for everyone walking into a club for the first time. There's something very addictive about getting to create that for an audience. You don't have to follow the mood and energy set by the DJ before you. It's in your hands, you have control over that. Musically you can take things wherever you want, it was an incredible privilege.

So as a creative I see many parallels in design. It's the mood you get to lay down, the energy you get to build over a set of work and its storytelling at the end of the day.

I think I sometimes forget that. The joy of storytelling and the privilege of it. It's the ultimate warm-up set.
